Surplus Property for Sale

(Updated Aug. 1, 2023)

Submit a Surplus Property Acquisition request at the DFA Service Catalog if you are interested in obtaining surplus property for your department. Find the Equipment Management menu and select 'Surplus Property Acquisition.'

Surplus items are first offered to other departments at UC Merced. If the item is worth $50,000 or more, it will then be made available to other UC campuses. If there are no "takers," the items are put up for public sale. The majority of our surplus property is auctioned off through Public Surplus.

Monthly lists

  • Monthly lists are sent to those registered on the Surplus Email List. Submit a request at the DFA Service Catalog if you would like to have your name added to this email list. Find the Equipment Management menu and select 'General Request.' Items on the email are not offered to the public, students or employees until they are posted on the Public Surplus website.

Important: Surplus items are usually used, not new, and sold "as is" with no warranty. All sales are final. The Surplus Department does not perform repairs and cannot offer technical advice.

For any questions related to surplus property procedures, please visit General Requests.

Purchase Restrictions

  • Employees or relatives of employees in departments that report to either the Surplus Administrator or the Equipment Administrator, or in departments that generate excess property, may not purchase excess property directly from the university.

Distribution of Funds from Sales of Surplus

Funds generated from the sale of excess equipment will be distributed in the following manner:

  • For items or item lots valued ≤ $100, 100% of the proceeds will be allocated to Administrative/Program costs.
  • For items or item lots valued OVER $100, the first $100 and 10% of any amount exceeding $100 will be retained for Administrative/Program costs. The remaining 90% of the proceeds will be returned to the custodial department/FAU.

The distribution of funds will be reviewed annually and adjusted as needed to support the Administrative/Program costs.

Administrative/Program costs include pickup, storage, transportation, disposal fees, advertising, supplies, and other costs directly related to the administration of the surplus program.
